Blackmagic Design Unveils DaVinci Resolve 21

Blackmagic Design has just dropped a bombshell at NAB 2026. While we expected the usual suite of refinements and AI boosts, DaVinci Resolve 21 has fundamentally shifted the landscape by introducing a dedicated Photo page.

For the Koala Audio community—whether you’re a video editor, post-production engineer, or a multi-hyphenate content creator—this update isn't just about moving pixels. It’s about a more unified, collaborative, and AI-driven creative ecosystem.

The Game Changer: Hollywood Grading Meets Still Photos

The headline feature is undoubtedly the Photo page. For years, photographers have looked at Resolve's node-based color grading and high-end scopes with envy. Now, you can bring that same Hollywood-grade power to your raw stills.

Node-Based Stills: Say goodbye to linear layers. Use serial and parallel nodes to build complex looks across your photo albums.

Direct Camera Tethering: Resolve 21 now supports live image capture from Sony and Canon cameras. Capture directly into an "Album" and apply your grade in real-time.

Non-Destructive Reframing:Crop and reframe at the original source resolution. Because the Photo page is built on the same engine as the Color page, your image quality remains pristine.

The Next Wave of AI Tools

Blackmagic continues to double down on the DaVinci Neural Engine. Version 21 introduces several tools that seem almost like magic for fixing footage and speeding up organization.

AI IntelliSearch:Searching for that one clip where a specific person is talking about "the budget"? IntelliSearch analyzes your media to find people, objects, and even specific keywords in dialogue.

AI CineFocus:Forgot to pull focus or want to change it in post? This tool lets you redefine the focal point, adjust aperture, and even add realistic bokeh.

AI Speech Generator: Generate high-quality voiceovers from text using Blackmagic’s models or a 10-second sample of your own voice. Perfect for quick scratch tracks or localized narration.

AI Face & Body Tools:From the Face Age Transformer (ideal for flashbacks) to Blemish Removal and Motion Deblur, the AI toolkit for "fixing it in post" has never been more robust.

Audio & Workflow: Fairlight Folders and Collaboration

For the audio-focused among us, the update brings some much-needed organizational muscle to the Fairlight page.

Folder Tracks:You can now group audio tracks into folders and collapse them into a single view. This is a lifesaver for massive sessions with dozens of tracks, keeping your workspace clean while giving you an overview of clip duration and count within each folder.

Fairlight Animator:This is a fascinating bridge between audio and VFX. You can now drive Fusion animations (like mouth movements or light flickers) based on the audio levels of your Fairlight tracks.

Cloud Collaboration: The Photo page is fully integrated into Blackmagic Cloud, meaning photographers, colorists, and editors can work on the same project simultaneously, regardless of where they are in the world.

Other Notable Updates:

Krokodove in Fusion:Over 70 new motion graphic tools integrated directly into the Fusion toolset.

Apple Immersive:Support for foveated rendering and new VR180/360 presets for Meta Quest and YouTube.

MultiMaster Trim:Generate HDR and SDR deliverables from a single timeline simultaneously.
