PowerCON Connectors and locking power connectors

powerCON powerCON is Neutrik's locking mains connector for professional audio, lighting and staging. It exists because a standard IEC lead falls out — and on a touring rig, a speaker that loses power mid-show is a bigger problem than the twenty seconds it saves at load-in. The connector twists and locks, it is keyed so you cannot connect the wrong end, and the higher-rated versions carry enough current to daisy-chain several powered speakers from one supply.

Blue is in, grey is out

The single most useful thing to know about powerCON. The original 20A range is colour-coded and mechanically keyed so the two halves cannot be confused:

  • Blue — power in. This is the connector that takes mains into the device.
  • Grey — power out. This is the link connector that carries power on to the next unit in the chain.

A blue connector physically will not mate with a grey chassis socket, which is deliberate — it stops anyone daisy-chaining a rig backwards. When you are ordering, work out whether you need the inlet or the outlet side before you buy, because they are not interchangeable.

powerCON, powerCON TRUE1 or TRUE1 TOP?

If you are buying for live or touring use, TRUE1 is almost always the right answer. The ability to disconnect safely under load is the whole point of it, and TRUE1 has largely superseded the original range on new equipment. Check what your speakers and amplifiers are actually fitted with before ordering — the two are not cross-compatible.

Matching the connector to your cable

powerCON cable connectors are made for specific cable diameters, and using the wrong one gives you either a strain relief that will not grip or a bushing that will not close. Measure the outside diameter of your cable and match it:

  • 6–12mm OD — the common size for standard 1.5mm² flexible mains cable.
  • 8–13mm OD — for heavier or double-insulated cable.
  • 10–16mm OD — for large-diameter and high-current runs.

Cable connectors and chassis connectors

Cable connectors terminate the end of a cable. Chassis and panel connectors mount into the equipment or into a rack panel. A working powerCON link needs one of each: a chassis inlet on the device and a cable connector on the lead. If you are building a rack, count both.

What is a powerCON connector?

It twists and locks so it cannot shake loose, it is keyed so power-in and power-out cannot be confused, and the higher-rated versions allow several powered speakers to be daisy-chained from one supply.

What is the difference between powerCON and powerCON TRUE1?

The original powerCON is not rated for connecting or disconnecting under load — you switch the power off first. TRUE1 is rated for connection and disconnection under load, so it can be unplugged with the equipment running, which is why it has become standard on touring gear. They are not cross-compatible.

What does powerCON TRUE1 TOP add?

TOP is the sealed version: when mated it is IP65-rated and UV resistant, so it withstands rain and sunlight. It is the outdoor and festival version of TRUE1. Sealing caps are available for panel connectors left unused.

What do the blue and grey powerCON connectors mean?

Blue is power in, grey is power out. They are mechanically keyed so a blue connector cannot mate with a grey socket, which prevents a rig being daisy-chained the wrong way round. Check which side you need before ordering — they are not interchangeable.

Can I connect powerCON under load?

Only TRUE1 and TRUE1 TOP. The original 20A powerCON range must be powered down before connecting or disconnecting. Ignoring that risks arcing across the contacts and damaging the connector.

Which powerCON connector fits my cable?

Measure the outside diameter of the cable. We stock connectors for 6–12mm, 8–13mm and 10–16mm OD. A connector sized for the wrong diameter will not grip properly and the strain relief will not do its job.

What is the difference between a cable connector and a chassis connector?

Do I need special tools to assemble powerCON connectors?

Not for occasional work — the standard range assembles with a screwdriver. Neutrik makes dedicated hand tools for tightening the bushings on TRUE1 TOP, FXX and speakON series connectors, which are worth having if you are terminating cables regularly or want consistent torque on a professional build.
