A DVD player is an electronic device designed to play digital video discs (DVDs), a type of optical disc storage media used for storing video, audio, and data. DVD players were introduced in the late 1990s and quickly became a popular home entertainment option, replacing the older VHS tape players.

DVD players can be standalone devices connected to a television or integrated into other devices, such as computers, game consoles, or home theatre systems. They read the digital information stored on the DVD disc using a laser and then process and output the audio and video signals to a connected display and speaker system.

In addition to playing DVDs, many DVD players can also play CDs (Compact Discs), offering both video and audio playback capabilities. Some DVD players support additional formats like VCDs (Video CDs), MP3s, or JPEG images, and may include features like progressive scan or upscaling to enhance the video quality on high-definition displays.

In recent years, DVD players have been gradually replaced by more advanced technologies, such as Blu-ray players and streaming media devices, which offer higher-quality video and audio, as well as access to a wide range of online content.
