Antares Unveils AutoTune Advanced: Tight Tuning That Finally Keeps the Vibrato

You know the moment. You pull the retune speed down to tighten a lead vocal, and the notes lock in beautifully, but the singer's vibrato goes with them. What was a living, breathing performance now sounds like it's been ironed flat. So you back the correction off, and suddenly the pitchy bits are back. It's the oldest trade-off in vocal production.

Antares reckons it has finally cracked it. The company has just launched AutoTune Advanced, a new flagship edition of the plug-in built on a ground-up rebuild of its Auto-Mode pitch-correction algorithm, and it introduces an all-new engine called DVA that detects a singer's natural vibrato and preserves it while the rest of the note gets tuned.

Let's dive into what makes this a game-changer for your vocal chain.

DVA: Correction That Knows When to Back Off

The headline feature is DVA, Antares' new vibrato detection and preservation engine. Instead of treating every wobble in pitch as an error, DVA identifies vibrato as a deliberate part of the performance and leaves it intact, so the natural rise and fall of the voice survives even at tighter settings. A real-time display shows you what the engine is hearing, which takes the guesswork out of knowing whether the vibrato is being respected.

It doesn't stop at preservation, either. The new Creative Vibrato FX panel lets you cut vibrato back, push it harder, or generate artificial vibrato from a choice of waveshapes where the singer didn't give you any, with control over timing and expression and a visualiser that tracks the shaping as it happens.

Antares CEO Jeff Wright summed up the thinking neatly: DVA can tell the difference between a pitch error and a decision the vocalist made, and it leaves the decision alone.

A Rebuilt Engine and a Faster Live Mode

Under the hood, Antares describes the updated Auto-Mode algorithm as the largest engineering investment in AutoTune since the plug-in was introduced, promising its clearest and most accurate automatic tuning yet.

Latency has had attention too. A new Live mode is designed for ultra-fast real-time monitoring, with Antares quoting processing latency of just 0.84ms at 44.1kHz. That matters when you're tracking a singer through the plug-in and want them locked into the performance rather than distracted by lag. Live sits alongside a High Quality mode for final mixes and bounces, and a Low Latency mode for general studio work.

Sculpt the Tone, Play the Tuning

AutoTune Advanced also refreshes the tools regular users lean on every day. The Formant Designer has been updated for timbral shaping, there's a redesigned workflow for entering custom scales, and a new 78-note Visual Keyboard makes setting up per-note behaviour far quicker. MIDI Perform mode puts tuning and Vibrato FX under the control of your MIDI keyboard, so you can play corrections and effects in real time rather than drawing them in.

You also get a set of new presets from Grammy-winning producers, engineers and artists, and the plug-in is compatible with AutoKey 2 for automatic key and scale detection.

Should You Upgrade?

If you've ever had to choose between an in-tune vocal and a natural-sounding one, AutoTune Advanced is aimed squarely at you. For pop and hip-hop producers who live in Auto-Mode, the faster Live mode and MIDI Perform make it a stronger tracking and performance tool. For engineers working on more exposed, organic vocals, DVA could be the feature that finally lets you tune without apologising for it.
