Universal Audio Unveils Capitol Studios: Record Inside the Rooms Behind Sinatra and Billie Eilish

Ever wished you could drop a vocal or a drum kit into a world-famous tracking room without leaving your home studio? Universal Audio Capitol Studios is built to do exactly that. It's a native room-modelling and reverb plug-in that recreates Capitol Studios' Studio A and Studio B, along with the microphones, consoles and outboard gear that shaped records there.

Instead of dialling in a generic hall or plate and hoping for the best, you place sources in a modelled room, pick a mic setup, and let the space respond. Let's dive into what makes this one worth a look.

Two Legendary Rooms, One Plug-In

Capitol Studios A and B are rooms associated with artists from Frank Sinatra through to Billie Eilish. The plug-in lets you put vocals, drums and other instruments inside virtual versions of both, so the sense of space comes from the room itself rather than a bolt-on reverb tail.

Move the Mics, Hear the Room React

The dynamic room modelling means you can reposition microphones within the space and hear the result in real time. That makes mic placement a creative decision during mixing, not just something you got right or wrong at the tracking stage. There's also a mic locker of vintage microphone setups curated by Capitol alum Steve Genewick, plus Decca Tree ensemble setups, a three-mic array suited to strings, horns and vocal groups.

Echo Chambers, Consoles and Outboard

Beneath Capitol Tower sit four echo chambers, and they're modelled here too, giving you a classic route to depth and size. The plug-in also emulates large-format British consoles and in-house analogue gear, and ships with presets from past and present Capitol engineers, producers and musicians as starting points.
