It’s precisely these qualities that often make woodwinds the top choice when a seamless melody is needed to convey a message. This Woodwinds Collection breathes the air of the big (and small) screen – quite literally as one of the flute virtuosos sampled to perfection is the Vienna Synchron Orchestra’s very own Veronika Vitazkova, who toured with none other than Maestro Ennio Morricone and regularly lends her talents to TV & film scoring (“True Detective: Night Country” or Marvels “Moon Knight”) as well as various recording projects (“Cluster Ensemble plays Philip Glass”).

One of the key playing techniques for woodwinds and one that’s been used especially by the greats of film scoring is legato. Each note flows smoothly into the next as if they were one, weaving an endless tapestry of sound. Besides the included the regular and fast legatos, lyrical legato offers a slower, a bit more pronounced and beautifully natural transition between notes in slow and medium tempos. Virtuosic legato is specifically designed for fast phrases. The „auto-speed” patch of the Vienna Synchron Player provides you with authentic note transitions depending on the tempo of your playing.

Recording any instrument is always a difficult task, but woodwinds often tend to provide an even bigger challenge. They just need certain top-notch acoustics to unfold their inherent magic. Luckily the Synchron Stage is the perfect environment for capturing the breath of music. When renowned composer, orchestrator and conductor Conrad Pope (who for the longest time has worked with John Williams, amongst others) stepped onto our Stage A he happily exclaimed that this was finally a scoring stage big and especially high enough for the piccolo to sound as great as it should. Of course, all the other woodwinds benefit immensely from the outstanding acoustics of this hall as well – making the sound of Synchron Stage a landmark in film scoring

Synchron Woodwinds also features ensemble recordings that are included in the Big Bang Orchestra Packs Neptune, Orion and Solaris.The massive “Tutti Woodwinds” ensemble consists of 13 instruments, from the piccolo to the contrabassoon, that are played in unison and octaves. Each of the “Woodwind Sections” consisting of flutes, oboes, clarinets in Bb and bassoons is made up of three musicians playing together in unison. The “Low FX Woodwinds” section of three contrabassoons, two bassoons, one contrabass clarinet and two bass clarinets provides dramatic fundamental lows in unison and octaves as well as in clusters. The “High FX Woodwinds” section consists of one piccolo, three flutes, two oboes and four clarinets, playing long notes in unison and octaves, as well as runs and arpeggios in a wide variety of scales and chords.
