The 80s Hybrid Icon Reborn: Cherry Audio Unveils the Officially Licensed Ensoniq ESQ-1 Plugin

Back in 1986, the synthesizer world was undergoing a massive shift. Purely analog synths were giving way to the digital revolution, and right at the center of that crossroads stood a legendary machine: the Ensoniq ESQ-1. It combined the grit and character of digital lo-fi waveforms with the warmth of true analog filters.

For its 40th anniversary, the emulation wizards at Cherry Audio have done something unprecedented. In a first-of-its-kind official collaboration with Creative Technology (the current owners of the Ensoniq IP), they have brought this hybrid icon back to life in your DAW.

The Soul of the Original, Without the "Letterbox" Interface

If you ever owned or used an original ESQ-1 hardware unit, you probably remember the struggle of programming it. You had to navigate a complex, deep synthesis engine using a tiny, fluorescent letterbox screen, a single data slider, and a handful of clicky buttons.

Cherry Audio has completely reimagined the user experience. They’ve brought every single control directly to the surface with a beautifully rendered interface broken down into five intuitive, context-sensitive panels: Play, Edit, Modulation, Envelopes, and Sequencer.

Instead of menu-diving, you get an immediate visual overview of a legendary signal path.

Authentic Hybrid DNA: Digital Waves Meet Analog Filters

Because this is a fully licensed project, Cherry Audio didn't just guess at the sound—they built the plugin using the original 32 ESQ-1 waveforms. These are split into four distinct categories: Basic & Noise, Samples, Additive/Formant, and Band Limited. These are raw, sample-based EPROM waves that give the synth its signature late-80s lo-fi grit and evolving textures.

To shape those digital waves, Cherry Audio meticulously modeled the legendary Curtis CEM3379 analog low-pass filter chip. This specific chip is famous for its bright, brassy, and aggressive cutting power. The plugin perfectly replicates how the filter, its four DCAs, four multi-stage envelopes, and three LFOs interact to create those organic, metallic, and bell-like tones that defined countless synth-wave, industrial, and pop tracks.

Massive Modern Enhancements

While the vintage sound remains untouched, Cherry Audio has packing this release with massive workflow and performance upgrades that leave the 1986 hardware in the dust:

  • Massive Voice Boost: The original hardware was strictly limited to 8 voices. The new plugin features a stereo dual-layer architecture supporting up to 32 polyphonic voices per layer, allowing for massive multitimbral keyboard splits and stacked layers.

  • Modern Expression & MPE: Performers will love the inclusion of channel aftertouch, polyphonic aftertouch, and full MIDI Polyphonic Expression (MPE) support for incredibly dynamic, living patches.

  • Mighty Modulation Matrix: A comprehensive four-slot modulation matrix features a dead-simple click-to-assign layout with 41 sources and 85 destinations.

  • Sequencer & Arpeggiator: It features an independent arpeggiator and a syncable, transposable 16x4 polyphonic step sequencer per layer, complete with "humanize" pattern adjustments.

  • Studio-Quality FX: At the bottom sits a dedicated effects rack hosting three customizable chains with 20 studio-quality effects modules (including delays, choruses, and Cherry's famous Galactic Reverb).

Full SysEx Compatibility: Bring Your Old Patches Along

Do you still have original ESQ-1 patch banks sitting on your hard drive or stored on old hardware? Cherry Audio has included full SysEx data compatibility. You can simply drag and drop vintage .syx files directly into the plugin, or dump patches via MIDI straight from your old hardware. Even better, you can design a patch on your computer and export it back into a vintage ESQ-1 hardware synth!

Out of the box, it comes loaded with over 400 presets, including the complete library of the 40 original 1986 factory patches to give you that instant dose of nostalgia.
